Established in 2012, West Side Cinema offers the edge of world cinema in a relaxed and social atmosphere – themed music, cabaret style table seating and a ‘bring your own’ policy. We screen short films with every feature film: fiction and documentary from around the world.
We have a loyal audience and reputation for high quality and engaging programming. Our event driven model has brought filmmakers and screenwriters to Orkney, delivered quality workshops and talks free of charge, and collaborations with local festivals, organisations and businesses. We have recently piloted Orkney’s first ever film festival and ran a touring community cinema initiative giving unique film access and support to Orkney’s remote outer isles.
We are voluntary run and depend on the enormous amount of free time and dedication given by the committee and others in the community.

‘One of my favourites on this list. A not for profit voluntary run enterprise, West Side Cinema dedicates itself to showing the types of films normally confined to the film festivals of the world. They regularly go above and beyond to unearth gems that it would be impossible to track down for audiences, and screen them all together with short films. They also provide candle-lit tables and operate a bring your own policy. In short, this is cinema heaven in some of the most gorgeous scenery in Britain’. Nick Horton
